AfriForum says it won't let Malema get away with 'racist' utterances

Lobby group AfriForum said it would oppose the ruling of the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) that comments made by Economic Freedom Fighters leader Julius Malema were not hate speech.

The SAHRC held a media briefing on Wednesday during which it released its findings on hate speech cases lodged against Malema. Regarding a complaint that Malema had called for the slaughter of white people, the commission’s Dr Shanelle van der Berg said the commission found that although the statement could be construed by white people as hurtful, the context of the statement was important.

Malema said that white people would not be killed under his leadership, Van Der Berg noted.
