Chaos in municipal coalitions and suggestions on how to fix it – analyst

It has been a chaotic couple of months in the three cities run by opposition parties.

Strange bedfellows, the Democratic Alliance and the Economic Freedom Fighters, who are so far apart on the political spectrum, meant that any coalitions were going to be fragile, or even just singing from the same hymn sheet was going to be tricky. The fact that the executive mayors of the cities have all political power vested in them also means that the system is not really geared for power sharing.

This jostling for power and efforts by the opposition parties to make sure that their guy becomes the mayor led to the confrontations that took place in Johannesburg, Tshwane and Nelson Mandela Bay.
