'Cyril's being aggressive'

President Cyril Ramaphosa was using undue aggression against public protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane, advocate Dali Mpofu charged in court on Thursday.

He was speaking as Ramaphosa and Mkhwebane squared off in court over whether the remedial action against public enterprises minister Pravin Gordhan – as per the public protector’s recommendations – had been implemented or not. Ramaphosa asked the high court in Pretoria to declare that he had complied with the remedial action Mkhwebane directed in May, which was that he must take disciplinary action against Gordhan.

The remedial action was ordered after Mkhwebane found in May that Gordhan, when he was finance minister in 2010, had unlawfully approved the early pension payout of former Sars deputy commissioner Ivan Pillay.
