DUT vice-chancellor booed off stage at memorial for slain student

The vice chancellor of the Durban University of Technology (DUT) was heckled off the stage on Tuesday during a memorial service for slain student Mlungisi Madonsela Professor Thandwa Mthembu was set to close the service – hosted by the institution – at the DUT Ritson Hall.

Mthembu’s attempts at speaking were cut short as students dressed in Economic Freedom Fighters’ (EFF) regalia and hoisting placards moved to the front of the podium. He was booed and heckled and eventually left the venue when the struggle songs being sung by the crowd drowned out his attempts at speaking.

Mthembu was one of a long list of speakers that included Madonsela’s uncle, Xolani Ncanana; the 20-year-old’s friends; Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) provincial chairman Vusi Khoza, and one of the party’s members of Parliament (MPs), Marshall Dlamini.
