Heated parliamentary debate over motion to name Cape Town airport after Winnie Mandela

The Economic Freedom Fighters’ (EFF) proposal to change the name of the Cape Town airport to Winnie Madikizela-Mandela caused a passionate debate in the National Assembly on Tuesday, 5 March 2019.

The leader of EFF, Julius Malema, pleaded his case to Members of Parliament at the National Assembly held in Cape Town on Tuesday, 5 March 2019. Malema argued that renaming the airport after the late Winnie-Madikizela Mandela would erase the “false narrative that men alone waged and won the liberation struggle against race-based rule.

” Although Madikizela-Mandela remains one of the African National Congress’ (ANC) most symbolic figures, ANC only gave conditional support to the motioned tabled by the EFF.
