Judgement reserved in Trevor Manuel, EFF defamation case

Judgement was on Tuesday reserved in former finance minister Trevor Manuel’s defamation case against the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).

Manuel approached the South Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg after the party accused him of a conflict of interest in the appointment of South African Revenue Service (Sars) commissioner Edward Kieswetter. In a statement in March, the EFF accused Manuel of nepotism and corruption in influencing the appointment of new Sars commissioner Kieswetter.

Manuel was the head of a selection panel that interviewed candidates for the post of commissioner.
