Added to those is the need for the presidency to demonstrate a much higher standard of leadership than was the case under Jacob Zuma.

The choice of Loftus Versfeld as the venue will have been intended to indicate the Ramaphosa Government’s willingness to rein in the wasteful expenditures of the Zuma presidency, which are now a byword for government profligacy and waste. Ramaphosa is still to announce his Cabinet, something that was expected on 27 May, but which is now expected to take place later this week.

The president has indicated that he is likely to appoint a greatly reduced Cabinet of up to 32 ministers and deputy ministers, down from the 72-strong Zuma ministry.
