The SA Police Service said it was investigating two cases of assault against members of the Economic Freedom Fighters. This followed an incident in the corridors of Parliament on Thursday night where EFF MP, Marshall Dlamini, was seen on video slapping police officer, Warrant Officer, Johan Carstens.

Parliament has condemned the incident and ordered a probe before taking appropriate action. The EFF, in turn, said Dlamini was acting in "self-defence" because the party had received threats on the life of Commander In Chief, Julius Malema in an apparent bid to undermine the process of land expropriation without compensation. The EFF said they were told that Parliamentary Protection Services or so-called White Shirts would be infiltrated by these group and when Malema was apparently approached by Carstens, Dlamini thought this was the moment and reacted with the necessary self-defence.

National Police spokesperson, Vishnu Naidoo, says two police officers have now opened cases against the red berets."These two police officers were at the entrance to the Chamber and as the members of the opposition party were exiting they were alleged to have assaulted these two police officers," he said.Naidoo said once the investigation was completed the docket would be sent to a senior public prosecutor for a decision.
