  The sight of Nelson Mandela alighting from prison after serving twenty-seven years will forever be etched in the memory of all those who played a part in the anti-apartheid movement.

Public intellectuals like Randall Robinson, et al, played a critical role in providing the anti-apartheid movement with mass support that came from the progressive community of the United States and around the world. Mandela’s release from prison represented the beginning of the end of apartheid in South Africa.

There were other epic moments that drove nails in the coffin of South Africa’s odious brand of racism.
